One of the questions I get asked most often is, "How do I prepare my home for an in-home session?"

The good news is that your home doesn't need to look like it belongs in a magazine. In fact, the most meaningful in-home sessions happen in lived-in homes because they're a true reflection of your family's story.

In-home sessions are a wonderful option for so many families. They're especially popular for newborn sessions, families with young children who feel most comfortable in familiar surroundings, and families with elderly relatives who may have mobility challenges. They're also perfect if you're looking for a relaxed, personal session in a place that already holds so many special memories.

When preparing your home, I recommend choosing just two or three areas where you'd like your photos taken. This might be your living room, master bedroom, nursery, children's bedroom, or even an outdoor area such as your deck or backyard. We don't need to use every room in your home in fact, we usually only use a handful of spaces throughout the session.

The most important thing I look for is natural light. Rooms with large windows and plenty of daylight almost always photograph beautifully. I'll work with the available light and help choose the best angles to make your home look its absolute best.

Before your session, spend a little time tidying and decluttering the areas you've chosen. Remove anything you don't want appearing in your photographs, such as everyday clutter, charging cables, laundry baskets, or children's toys that you don't want featured. You don't need to deep clean your entire house just focus on the spaces we'll actually be using.

Sometimes simply moving a chair, bedside table, or small piece of furniture can create more space and make photographing your family much easier. Don't worry though you won't be expected to rearrange your whole home. I'll happily help move small items around if needed on the day.

If you're unsure which rooms will work best, don't stress. I'm always happy to help. You can send me a few photos of your home before your session, and I'll suggest which spaces are likely to photograph the best and offer advice on anything you may want to move or prepare beforehand.

My goal is to make your in-home session as relaxed and enjoyable as possible. Your home tells part of your family's story, and I love capturing the little details that make it uniquely yours.
