If you’re worried about how your kids will behave during your session, you’re not alone. It’s probably the number one concern parents have and the good news is, you don’t need “perfect” kids to get beautiful photos.
But there are a few simple things you can do to help set everyone up for success.
First, talk about the session in a positive, relaxed way. Instead of making it feel like something they have to do, frame it as something fun a chance to play, cuddle, and spend time together as a family. Kids pick up on energy quickly, so if it feels low-pressure and exciting to you, it will feel the same to them.
Second, timing matters. Try to plan your session around naps and meals so your little ones aren’t tired or hungry. Even bringing along a small, mess-free snack can be a great backup if they need a quick reset during the session. A well-rested, fed child is always going to be more settled and happy.
Comfort is key too. Make sure they feel good in what they’re wearing nothing too tight, itchy, or unfamiliar. If possible, let them try their outfit on beforehand so it doesn’t feel new or uncomfortable on the day. When kids feel comfortable, they’re much more likely to relax and be themselves.
It can also help to avoid putting too much pressure on them before you arrive. Try not to over-remind them to “be good” or “smile nicely,” as this can sometimes make them feel like they need to perform. Instead, let them know they just get to be themselves.
And finally let go of expectations.
Your child doesn’t need to sit still, smile perfectly, or “perform.” Some of the most beautiful moments come from movement, cuddles, giggles, and even those quieter, clingy moments. I always work with your child as they are on the day, not against them.
Trust that I’ve seen it all shy kids, wild kids, “not in the mood” kids and we always create something special. Sometimes the sessions parents worry about the most end up being their absolute favourites.
