Can I Bring My Children to My Maternity Session?

Two of the most common questions I get when someone is inquiring about a maternity session are:

Can I bring my children? And should I bring my children?

And my answer is always the same — of course you can!

So I thought I would share a little bit about family maternity sessions for those who are considering this option.

I have done many family maternity sessions over the years, and they are so very special. Capturing your child/ren’s excitement as they prepare for the arrival of their younger sibling is a memory you will truly treasure. Those little moments of curiosity, cuddles, and connection are so beautiful to look back on.

Your maternity session is ABOUT YOU.

You can have whoever you want included — your partner, your child/ren, your best friend, your sister, your parent/s, or even your fur baby! There is no right or wrong choice here, only what feels right for you.

What happens at a family maternity session?

Family maternity sessions are very much focused on mum and the bump. We will capture:

  • Just mum
  • Mum and partner
  • Mum and kids

With the kids, we do sweet and natural poses like kissing mum’s bump, hands on the bump, cuddles, and standing close together. With mum, we will do a range of beautiful poses to really show off the bump. And with your partner, we’ll do similar poses to the kids, plus a few extra couple-style images.

No matter who you choose to include, we will always capture a variety of images — both of you on your own and with those attending the session. The focus will always remain on mum and bump.

Questions to ask yourself

  • Will the kids want to be part of this?
  • In a few years’ time, will they be sad they weren’t included?
  • Have they shown much interest in the bump or the baby?
  • Do you want memories of just you at this stage of your journey, or with others too?

Mel’s Tips if Bringing Your Child/ren

  • Bring someone along who can watch your child/ren so you and your partner can get some couple photos without worrying about the kids or having them interrupt photos.
  • Bring snacks for the kids (this one is a lifesaver!).

Still not sure? Feel free to send me a message and we can chat further about what is best for you and your family.
